Championship Day
created 03/23/2023 @ 8:49pm by jimehnert

Championship Bracket

Usually in a Dartball Tournament Championship match, regardless of player skill level, the nerves of all shooters are on display early and often until the jitters subside...a few diapers, quick one-two-three innings, and maybe a stray dart off the board. This was definately not the norm as #3 seed Pioneer Bowl visited #1 seed Town 9 Tap playing for the 2022-23 Country Dartball League Championship. Pioneer Bowl jumped out quick in game one with 3 runs in the top of the first inning, only to have Town 9 Tap respond by sending 10 batters to the plate and putting a 6-pack on the board for a quick 6-3 lead after one...the jitters were gone for both teams. The game went back-and-forth, and led by red hot 9-hole hitter Mike Aulenbacher, the Tappers held a 10-7 lead through 7-innings. Run scoring triples by Mark Rubusch, Joel Heidtke, and Jared Kuhfuss contributed to a 5-run 8th inning for Pioneer, giving the bowlers a short lived 12-10 lead. However singles by Keith Moldenhauer and Doug Fiedler put the tying runs on for the Townies in the bottom of the frame, and with two outs, newly enshrined Hall-of-Famer Bruce Friesch banged a 2-run triple to tie the game at 12 apiece after 8 innings. In the top of the 9th, The Bowl's 9-hitter Drarrell Blair hit a one out single and with two outs, Kim Schmitt drove in Blair with a 2-out triple and a 13-12 lead for the Bowlers. Town 9 Tap could only generate a single in the bottom of the 9th inning, and lost game one 13-12.

Game two was another see saw affair that saw Pioneer Bowl take a 7-5 lead after the 7th inning. The floodgates then opened up in the 8th inning for both squads. Town 9 Tap sent 10 batters to the dish, and carved out another 6-pack behind run scoring triples from Aulenbacher, Jason Roecker and Jeff Moldenhauer. Trailing 11-7, The Bowlers had a "not so fast my friends" moment as they returned serve with 5 runs in the bottom of the 8th inning, taking a 12-11 lead. Town 9 responded in the top of the 9th inning as an Andy Duthie triple tied the game and was soon followed by a lead garnering single from Keith Moldenhauer and a T9T 13-12 lead. Pioneer came back again and a run scoring triple from Chad Kuhfuss tied the game 13-13 and sent it to extras...who doesn't love free dartball. Town 9 failed to score in the top of the 10th inning setting the stage for Pioneer, who was one run away from back-to-back Country Dartball League Championships. One out on the board, and keen eyed Jared Kuhfuss drew a walk for Pioneer Bowl. Capping off a 4-6 game two, 90-year old Vern Kappes calmly ripped a game winning triple, powering Pioneer Bowl to a 14-13 victory and the CDL Championship. Chad Kuhfuss said it best, "that guy (Vern) is amazing"!

Kappes and Blair were named Championship Game Co-MVP's for Pioneer Bowl. Leon Schmidt 7-11 and Blair 7-10 lit the lamp for Pioneer. Mike Aulenbacher led Town 9 Tap hitting 7-10 on the night.

Consolation Bracket

Sportscorner 1 visited DJ's Goalpost to play for The Country Dartball League Consolation bracket Championship. DJ's used tallies in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th inning, and behind Keith Larson and Alex Vance, captured game one 4-2, taking a 1-0 series lead over The Denim. Tied at 6-6 heading to the top of the 9th inning ,It was Larson again who en route to his 4-5 game two, started off the top of the 9th with a single, and was then knocked in by a Jason Wrasse triple and an eventual 7-6 win over Sportscorner 1. Despite the game 2 efforts of SCI Jamey Schaetzel, 4-4 with 5 RBI, Sportscorner could not pull off the road upset.
